If you can find another copy of the game you can also try that. Try installing it, if everything's fine it's the game disc. The frame rate drops in a race sometimes If a buddy signs on or I get a message but it only happen like once or twice. My game froze 3 times the first day I played it. I installed it to the hard drive, this fixed it. As an added bonus, it also make the load times between menus a lot quicker.
